The Raoul Wallenberg Research Initiative RWI-70 – Aug 2022 update

August 27th is Raoul Wallenberg Day in Sweden

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

August 27th is Raoul Wallenberg Day in Sweden which is marked by a variety of events and celebrations, including the awarding of the Raoul Wallenberg Prize! You can find more information in the attached newsletter. RWI-70 4-2022

There is news about an upcoming Wallenberg Symposium in Santa Fe, plus you can check out some rare photographs of Raoul Wallenberg’s grandfather.

Also, have a look Part II of our series “New Insights from the Raoul Wallenberg Case File”. It features an interesting recent column in Svenska Dagbladet by Swedish author and expert on freedom of information Inga-Britt Ahlenius on the problem of “empty archives, plus an in-depth analysis by Dr. Vadim Birstein of the statements made by the Ex-SMERSH officer Boris Solovov about the Wallenberg case.

During 1945-47 Solovov served as an interrogator in the SMERSH/MGB department that directly dealt with Raoul Wallenberg. Dr. Birstein’s review provides important new insights about the interviews conducted with older MGB/KGB officials in the early 1990s.

Wishing you a nice end of summer! I will get back to you at the end of September with another update –

Susanne
